Both a variance and a special permit were required to build this single dwelling unit behind an existing historic house. The design was a fusion of historic commission, abutter and architect input. The resulting property feels as though it’s in a more beaucolic locale. Its gardens are a haven for birds; the interior is a modern yet informal efficient and flexible layout of space.
